Sadly, SCHIP failed to override Bush's veto in the House in October. Now, Democrats are forced to water down the bill--and our government's ability to insure poor children--until it satisfies the hold-outs on the far right. These developments surrounding the SCHIP legislation serve to reinforce the importance of electing a Democratic president and enlarging our fragile majority in Congress.
The President says on one hand that he wants to support children's health, but on the other hand has declared doing so as excessive spending and decried SCHIP as socialized medicine. We simply need a shift in priorities among our leadership--and that starts by changing who we send to represent us, be it in Washington or Trenton.
